Police services in Ingersoll are provided by the Ontario Provincial Police pursuant to an agreement between the Town and the Province. In March 2019, the Ontario government passed the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019 (CSPA). On its proclamation date of April 1, 2024, the CSPA replaced the Police Services Act. Under the CSPA, effective April 1, 2024, the Ingersoll Police Services Board became the Ingersoll OPP Detachment Board. The Board is one of the three OPP Detachment boards in Oxford County. 
The Board is a civilian body that oversees the Ingersoll detachment of the OPP and draws its authority from the CSPA and regulations. Section 68(1) of the CSPA sets out the role of the Board in oversight.

The Board’s role under Section 68(1) the CSPA is to:
(a) consult with the Commissioner regarding the selection of a detachment commander and otherwise participate, in accordance with the regulations made by the Minister, in the selection of the detachment commander;
(b) determine objectives and priorities for the detachment, not inconsistent with the strategic plan prepared by the Minister, after consultation with the detachment commander or his or her designate;
(c) advise the detachment commander with respect to policing provided by the detachment;
(d) monitor the performance of the detachment commander;
(e) review the reports from the detachment commander regarding policing provided by the detachment; and
(f) on or before June 30 in each year, provide an annual report to the municipalities and band councils regarding the policing provided by the detachment in their municipalities or First Nation reserves. 2019, c. 1, Sched. 1, s. 68 (1); 2023, c. 12, Sched. 1, s. 28.

The Ingersoll OPP Detachment Board has five (5) members: two members of Town Council, one citizen appointed by the province as a community representative, and two citizens appointed by Town Council as a community representatives.
Council members and the citizens appointed by council serve for the duration of the Council term. Provincial appointees serve up to three-year terms, which expire at various times. At the first meeting each year, the Board appoints a Chairperson for that year.

How does it work?
Crime Stoppers encourages people to call with information to solve crimes already committed, crimes about to occur or wanted persons.
How to use the program?
If you have any information on any crime, you are requested to call Crime Stoppers at 421-TIPS(8477). Callers out of the Woodstock or Ingersoll area may call toll free at 1(800)-222-TIPS(8477). Crime Stoppers callers never have to identify themselves or give evidence in court and are eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.00.
The Town of Ingersoll is seeking applications from qualified individuals to fill one vacancy on the Town of Ingersoll’s OPP Detachment Board for the remainder of the 2022-2026 term of Council. These are paid appointments; members will receive compensation on a per-meeting basis.
Mandate of the Board

- Consult with the Commissioner regarding the selection of a Detachment Commander and otherwise participate, in accordance with the regulations, in the selection of the detachment commander;
- Determine objectives and priorities for the detachment, not inconsistent with the strategic plan prepared by the Minister after consultation with the Detachment Commander or his or her designate;

Eligibility for Membership
Interested applicants must be:

- A Canadian Citizen (or landed immigrant)
- Resident of the Town of Ingersoll
- At least 18 years of age
- Not one of the following: Judge or Justice of the Peace; Member of a Police Service, Special Constable, or a First Nation Officer; someone practicing criminal law (either defense or prosecution); a Director, Officer, or Employee of any policing provider; a former member of the OPP.
Desired Skills, Experience, and Competencies
The Town is seeking members with different experiences and perspectives to create a Board that reflects the community. Desired skills and competencies to fulfil the Board’s mandate include:

- Community involvement
- Understanding of the role of the OPP Detachment Board
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in such things as Board governance, policing and oversight, strategic planning, policy-making, financial management and budgeting, risk management/auditing, communications, and conflict resolution.
Appointees will be required to undergo a police record check and must complete mandatory training once appointed. The Board must meet a minimum of four times per year but generally meets once monthly.
Section 33 of the Community Safety and Policing Act establishes that a municipality must consider the need to ensure that its Detachment Board is representative of the area that it serves and that its members possess the required competencies to serve on the Board. Please refer to sections 33 and subsections 35(1), (2) and (3) of the Act for further requirements of OPP Detachment Board Members.
Compensation
Compensation rate is based per meeting of the board. Compensation rates for each position are as follows:
- Member - $77.25
- Vice Chair - $96.56
- Chair - $115.88
